A self-reflective day
WORLD leaders gathered alongside members of the South African public yesterday to celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela – but the event was somewhat overshadowed by a photo of David Cameron, Barack Obama and Danish PM Helle Thorning-Schmidt taking a selfie in the stands (left).
President Barack Obama earlier led tributes to Mandela at the service in Johannesburg, calling him “a giant of history”.
Dignitaries from all over the world joined crowds of South Africans to celebrate the life of the former President and ANC leader, who died last Thursday aged 95.
“We will never see the likes of Nelson Mandela again. While I will always fall short of Madiba, he makes me want to be a better man,” Obama said. On his way to the podium the US President shook hands with Cuban leader Raul Castro in an unprecedented gesture between the nations, who have been at odds for years.
