Sainsbury’s to lead jobs rise
SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury’s will create 20,000 new jobs over the next three years, as part of a government backed drive for the private sector to boost employment.
Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King said: “These new jobs will provide a huge boost to communities across the UK and as they are a mixture of full and part time positions there will be an opportunity suitable for everyone.”
The chief executives of 19 leading companies met with Prime Minister David Cameron yesterday to pledge fresh jobs for the UK.
Tesco has said it will create 9,000 new jobs, whilst WM Morrison has pledged 6,000 new jobs.
However, the British Chambers of Commerce has urged the government to do more to boost job creation in smaller firms, although welcomed measures to reform employment tribunal laws.
A consultation expected to launch next week could include a possible one-year extension of the time an employee must work for a firm before they can bring an unfair dismissal claim.
Director general David Frost said: “Companies want to know exactly what the government plans to do to remove obstacles to taking on staff.”
