Sainsbury’s cuts back on Nectar loyalty rewards
Sainsbury’s has halved the number of Nectar points its customers can earn, sparking fears that frustrated shoppers will turn to discounters such as Aldi and Lidl instead.
The retailer made changes to the loyalty scheme this weekend, meaning members now only earn one point for every £1 spent in-store and online, as opposed to two points.
Sainsbury’s Bank credit card and American Express Nectar credit card holders will also earn fewer points. The company will also stop rewarding points to customers using their own bags.
Sainsbury’s, which launched a £150m price cutting plan in November as part of a fight-back against the discounters, said it will instead offer “more targeted rewards” and sought to compensate this weekend by offering Nectar members 10 points per litre of fuel bought at the supermarket’s forecourts between now and 10 May.
