Ruthless Williams waltzes into round three
DEFENDING champion Serena Williams wasted no time in easing her way into the third round round of Wimbledon.
The American top seed came close to completing a ‘double bagel’ over Anna
Chakvetadze before the Russian finally won her only game, on serve, in game six of the
second set.
Williams is now on collision course for a last-16 showdown with 2004 champion Maria Sharapova, who impressed on her way to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ioana Raluca Olaru.
Also in that half of the draw is third seed Caroline Wozniacki, who had a tougher time seeing off Kai-Chen Chang, of Chinese Taipei, before coming through 6-4, 6-3.
Indeed, it proved a hassle-free days for the women’s seeds with Agnieszka Radwanska, Flavia Pennetta and Victoria Azarenka all safely through.
