IN-RUNNING TRADING HINTS
TOMORROW’S Hennessy Gold Cup looks sure to be run at a ferocious pace and in-running punters will remember how Denman traded well odds-on a long way from home in this very race two years ago.
However, it is often overlooked that his main market rivals were all but out of the race with over a circuit left. Snowy Morning (5/1 favourite) had fallen at the seventh, New Alco (13/2) was pulled up a long way out and Abragante (6/1) was always out the back. That meant that Denman was being chased home up the straight by a pretty moderate bunch (Madison Du Berlais aside). It will be a hell of a lot tougher for him this year and I’ll be looking to hit the lay button as soon as he hits odds-on in the home straight. There are plenty of genuine stayers at massive prices who have the ability to upset him in the closing stages.
The three that I am looking to include in my back-to-lay strategy are CASEY JONES (23.0), MON MOME (85) and CHELSEA HARBOUR (108). They all have stamina in abundance and I would not be at all surprised to see one of them alongside Denman approaching the last.
