Rugby League World Cup chiefs confirm tournament will go ahead in England this year despite Australia refusing to commit yet
The Rugby League World Cup will go ahead in England later this year, officials have said, despite Australia still not committing to playing.
The participation of around 500 Australia-based players and staff has been in doubt due to the strict quarantine rules they would face on their return.
And although Australian rugby league chiefs have not yet agreed to send their men’s women’s and wheelchair teams, enough other countries have to end uncertainty over the tournament.
“We are delighted to be able to provide clarity and certainty to fans, players, partners, media and those that have supported our journey over the past few years,” said chief executive Jon Dutton.
“We have an overwhelming desire to deliver the biggest and best ever Rugby League World Cup and through our determination and decisiveness we will be able to achieve this vision.
“There are still many challenges ahead, but we will work relentlessly and will take the most extraordinary measures with the support of all involved to stage the tournament in 100 days’ time.”
Why Australia may miss Rugby League World Cup
The Rugby League World Cup is due to begin in Newcastle on 23 October.
Australia are the men’s and women’s champions and are reported to favour postponing the tournament until next year.
Arrivals to Australia must spend 14 days in government-run quarantine, Sydney is in lockdown and 12 of the country’s rugby league teams have been moved to a Queensland bubble in order to complete the season.
While Dutton has refused to rule out a U-turn on delaying the tournament, he told the BBC it would be “significantly unpalatable”.
He added: “We are incredibly confident they [Australia] will sign the agreement and send strong teams across all three competitions.”
The World Cup is taking place across 21 venues mostly in north of England but at also including Emirates Stadium and the Copper Box in London.
For the first time, the men’s, women’s and wheelchair competitions are being held at the same time.
