Rodgers insists no Gerrard rift as skipper offered fresh deal
LIVERPOOL boss Brendan Rodgers insisted there has been no deterioration in his relationship with Steven Gerrard after revealing the Anfield skipper has been offered a new deal at the club.
Gerrard, who has also denied rumours of a rift, would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement in January ahead of his current deal expiring in the summer.
“No, 150 per cent no,” said Rodgers, when asked whether there had been a falling out between the pair. “I’ve enjoyed every single minute of working with him here and I hope that continues.
“But for everything he has done in the 16 years here, I need to give him the opportunity to think as long as it takes in order to decide what he wants to do next.”
Gerrard, 34, was dropped to the substitutes’ bench for Saturday’s much-needed victory over Mark Hughes’ Stoke City at Anfield and Rodgers has reiterated the need to moderate the ex-England captain’s workload ahead Liverpool’s clash at Leicester tonight. “What a player he has been and still is,” added Rodgers. “I see his talent every day and just need to manage that and think how it can be most effective.”
