Rival Redknapp backs Hodgson to succeed as England manager
TOTTENHAM manager Harry Redknapp believes West Brom counterpart Roy Hodgson will be a success as England manager if, as anticipated, the Football Association appoint him today.
Hodgson met with a four-man FA panel, consisting of FA chairman David Bernstein, general secretary Alex Horne, director of football development Trevor Brooking and Club England managing director Adrian Bevington, yesterday afternoon and is expected to imminently be announced as successor to Fabio Capello.
Redknapp had been the favourite for the role after the recent success of winning the 2008 FA Cup with Portsmouth, and leading Tottenham to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and though Hodgson is a surprise choice, his rival believes him capable of guiding England at Euro 2012.
“If Roy [Hodgson] takes the job I wish him all the best,” said Redknapp. “He’s a great guy. I’m sure he’ll be a big success. I still think England’s got some great players, I really do. I think there’s some fantastic players in this country, some young players coming through, some great experienced players. I’m looking forward to the European Championships.”
Bolton manager Owen Coyle also believes Hodgson is a suitable choice. He said: “If Roy decides to take the job, there is no doubt he ticks every box in terms of what England are looking for.”
