Dell Park in Englefield Green is a polo fanatic’s dream on part of the Candy brothers’ former estate in Surrey
The British polo season has got off to a galloping start, but for some fans of the equestrian sport, viewing it from the sidelines just isn’t good enough. That was certainly the case for the private European owner of Dell Park in Englefield Green, Surrey, who set out 10 years ago to build a contemporary home with its own stables, manege and polo pitch.
The 13.5 acre estate – which once formed part of the vast 77-acre Parkwood Estate previously owned by the billionaire Candy brothers – sits just 500 yards away from the Bishopsgate entrance to Great Windsor Park where you can ride your horses or mingle with polo’s social elite at the Guard’s Polo Club.
“It’s like having your own private Hurlingham Park [home to the Polo in the Park event],” Knight Frank’ agent James Crawford says. “You can be lying in bed or out on your balcony looking down at your polo team playing.”
But with the owner scaling back her polo activities the estate is now on the market for £12m, its vast grounds offering prospective buyers much more than equestrian fun. Designed by CSK Architects, the curved, glass fronted walls of the five-bedroom property feels more akin to the beachfront homes found on the Californian coastline than rural England.
A large spiral marble staircase runs through the core of the light and spacious home, leading to the master bedroom, which has panoramic views of the grounds. A home cinema and games room with its own tropical fish tank sits in the basement.
The grounds also boast a separate wing with a gymnasium and indoor pool that can be covered over with a false floor to create an entertaining space, as well as an outdoor tennis court, studio house and detached two-bedroom cottage that’s perfect for guests.
With elite schools including Eton and Wellington nearby, together with good transport links to London, Crawford believes the property will attract international buyers looking for a family home, as well as polo aficionados. Historic market towns, extensive woodland, golf clubs and multi-millionaire residents – including the Queen and Sir Elton John – also make this part of Surrey one of the UK’s most sought after postcodes.
