RBS boss suits up with workers for 500-mile slog around the UK
THE NIGHTS are getting longer and the weather less pleasant, but there’s no slowing down for RBS boss Ross McEwan. He’s planning to team up with hundreds of the bank’s staff to cycle 500 miles from London to Edinburgh.
RBS, which yesterday announced its partnership with Sport Relief 2016, is getting 750 staffers to cycle from its London head office all the way to Gogarburn, Edinburgh on September 14, calling in at a smattering of Britain’s powerhouses on the way including Birmingham and Manchester.
McEwan, along with his loyal followers, has already raised £180,000 for Sport Relief. McEwan said: “I’m really pleased with how many people from right across the bank are getting involved.”
While many bankers in the challenge will endure the full five days of saddle sores later this month, the RBS boss is getting away with a slightly more manageable 100-mile stretch. Slacker.
▀ FOLLOWING the success of Canada Square Park’s Twilight Delights concerts over the summer, next week we’re being treated to a “Spiegeltent” festival in Canary Wharf; 11 days of cabaret, circus acts, magic tricks, and childrens activities. And if you want to show off for yourself, on 14 September free street pianos will be popping up around the financial district. You can wind your bosses up by playing them badly if they make you stay late.
▀ WHILE Camden Council is busy making plans for a cycle super-highway connecting residents in the NW area to Canary Wharf, a crowdfunding appeal has just been launched to link Battersea residents to the Docklands. Who will win in this race between north and south Londoners? Camden has the upper hand for now, as the borough’s cabinet minister for transport pledged last week to have over 10km of new cycle paths connecting north London to the financial district by the end of 2016. Meanwhile, back in Battersea, the River Cycle Consortium, the firm behind the idea, are crowdfunding to road-test the feasibility of an eight mile bridge connecting the two boroughs. May the best postcode win!
