Ramsey set for extended audition for QPR job after landmark away victory
QUEENS Park Rangers are set to reward caretaker manager Chris Ramsey for achieving the club’s first Premier League away points of the season by leaving him in control for the rest of the campaign.
Coach Ramsey was placed in temporary charge last week following Harry Redknapp’s abrupt resignation and ended Rangers’ 11-match losing streak on their travels by winning 2-0 at Sunderland.
That appears to have been enough to persuade QPR chairman Tony Fernandes to task him with saving the club from relegation, though it is thought a bigger name may be lined up for the summer.
Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood had been expected to succeed Redknapp but talks collapsed earlier this week, while Real Madrid No2 Paul Clement, Derby’s Steve McClaren and ex-Swansea manager Michael Laudrup have all been linked with the post but made it clear they would not move during the middle of the season.
Fernandes handed the reins to Ramsey and director of football Les Ferdinand, who both worked with Redknapp and Sherwood at Spurs, when the former quit the morning after the transfer window closed, citing an urgent need for knee surgery.
Ramsey, 52, is a highly regarded coach but his management experience is limited to two years in charge of England Under-20s and three with American third-tier side Charleston Battery.
QPR lie 17th in the Premier League, just goal difference above the relegation zone.
