Racing betting: Danzeno’s a grand old bet to march home in the Duke Of York
With a 40/1 winner 12 months ago and two others at 25/1 and 20/1 within the last six years, the Duke Of York Clipper Logistics Stakes (Wednesday 3.15pm) has not been a happy hunting ground for favourite backers.
The betting for this year’s Group Two prize, run over six furlongs, is headed by Charlie Hills’ Magical Memory, who made an impressive reappearance in the Abernant Stakes at Newmarket last month.
Last year’s Stewards’ Cup winner looked better than ever and, with Frankie Dettori in the saddle, he will be a popular selection.
However, at as short as 9/4, I’m prepared to give him a miss and instead take a chance on the ultra-consistent DANZENO at 13/2 with Paddy Power.
Michael Appleby has always said that the five-year-old will improve with age and if he can repeat the form that saw him finish third in the British Champions Sprint when last seen in action, he may not have to.
The key to him is a decent fast surface, so keep an eye out for any significant overnight rain as that would be a disadvantage.
My preference for the opening 10 furlong handicap (2.10pm) is top-weight PACIFY who is bound to improve for his seasonal bow at Epsom.
Ralph Beckett’s four-year-old has only gone up 4lbs for that run behind Dark Red, who has won again since, and the better ground is another bonus.
Owned by the Prince Of Wales and the Duchess Of Cornwall, Pacify was at his most impressive on a quick surface last year and if the rain stays away he is a confident selection.
