Queen Merkel stands firm on EU treaty deal
GERMAN chancellor Angela Merkel failed to throw David Cameron the lifeline he needed over EU reform yesterday, warning in a speech that anyone looking for support for fundamental changes to the union would be “in for a disappointment.”
Merkel got the full red-carpet treatment during her visit to Downing Street, but if the pomp was designed to win her over on reform of freedom of movement rules it looks to have failed.
Merkel, who was likened to the Queen by one journalist, threw her weight between a stronger more united Europe, adding: “We have to tackle the great challenges of our times together. Individually and on our own I am deeply convinced we will achieve less than if we stand together.”
Cameron hailed the common ground between the two nations and said change is achievable.
