Qatar to stage athletics worlds
QATARI capital Doha yesterday won the race to stage the 2019 World Athletics Championships after fending off rival bids from Barcelona and the American city of Eugene in Oregon.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC), meanwhile, could be set to break with the tradition of awarding the summer Olympic Games to a single host city, opening the door for potential bids from entire countries and joint bids from more multiple cities from different countries.
The revamp formed part of 40 recommendations released yesterday as part of IOC president Thomas Bach’s reform agenda and has led to speculation of a pan-Gulf state bid for the 2024 summer Olympic Games.
