Qantas to claim cash from Rolls-Royce for jet blow-out
ROLLS-ROYCE is facing another claim for compensation over the blow-out of an engine on an A380 super-jumbo, it emerged yesterday.
Australian flag carrier Qantas said it would join Airbus in claiming compensation from Rolls for the disruption caused by the accident on 4 November, which forced the Qantas jet flying to Sydney from Singapore to make an emergency landing.
Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said it would discuss compensation with Rolls “when the time is appropriate”, although he declined to give details.
Rolls has said its annual profits would be slightly lower due to the cost of replacing the part in the Trent 900 engines suspected of causing the accident, which prompted regulators to order checks on all A380s.
The jet engine maker got a boost yesterday, however, from news that Qantas plans to start flying its Airbus A380 super-jumbos again this week.
Qantas, which grounded its A380s following the incident, said it plans to resume flying two of the jets between Sydney and London on Saturday, although it said its other four A380s would take some time to return.
Qantas plans to keep the A380 off high-margin Sydney-Los Angeles routes, which needs maximum certified engine thrust, as a precaution.
