President Trump names Bolton replacement

Donald Trump has named Robert O’Brien, the country’s chief hostage negotiator, as his new national security adviser.

O’Brien replaces John Bolton, who the US President sacked last week after the pair fell out over Iran and other tactics.

Trump announced the news by tweet, telling his followers: “I have worked long & hard with Robert. He will do a great job!”

I am pleased to announce that I will name Robert C. O’Brien, currently serving as the very successful Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs at the State Department, as our new National Security Advisor. I have worked long & hard with Robert. He will do a great job!

O’Brien is the fourth national security adviser of Trump’s presidency, and previously served under both the George W Bush and Barack Obama administrations.

The role does not require confirmation by Congress.
