Premier League: Gerrard hits back at Chelsea fans over barracking
AT STAMFORD BRIDGE
CHELSEA 1 LIVERPOOL 1
LIVERPOOL skipper Steven Gerrard aimed a swipe at Chelsea fans after his side’s draw against the newly-crowned champions yesterday all but ended their Champions League aspirations.
Gerrard earned the Reds a point after cancelling out Chelsea skipper John Terry’s opener, although fourth-placed Manchester United’s vastly superior goal difference ensures Liverpool are destined for the Europa League.
After Liverpool had afforded Chelsea a pre-match guard of honour, Gerrard was given a standing ovation by all sides of Stamford Bridge when substituted in the 79th minute, but only after receiving his customary level of abuse from home supporters.
“I’m not going to get drawn into wishing the Chelsea fans well, it was nice of them to turn up for once today,” said Gerrard. “I think the Chelsea fans have shown respect for a couple of seconds, but they’ve slaughtered me all game.”
Mourinho, who tried to sign Gerrard at Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, added: “To get an ovation at Stamford Bridge is special for Steven. The negative song only shows respect, nothing else than respect, like a negative song to a dear enemy. I’ll miss him.”
