Police warn Calais migrant chaos will continue into weekend as thousands more attempt to make the crossing through Channel Tunnel
Police on both sides of the Channel have warned that the chaos will continue into the weekend, as thousands more migrants attempt to make the crossing into England.
French interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve yesterday sent a further 120 police officers to deal with the escalating crisis. They have been deployed around the Eurotunnel site on a temporary basis to bolster security.
In Kent meanwhile, Operation Stack will continue until the weekend, causing chaos on Kent roads, with 18 hour queues to get to the port of Dover and Eurotunnel. Towns and cities in the county complained of traffic being brought to standstill as a result.
But the problem appears to be unravelling quicker than authorities are able to respond. So far this week 3,500 migrants have attempted the crossing, and one person has died.
Since the start of the year, Eurotunnel claims it has prevented 37,000 people from illegally making the journey from Calais to Kent.
Theresa May chaired an emergency Cobra meeting in Whitehall yesterday, as Eurotunnel claimed the problem was “too much” for the UK government to deal with.
Prime Minister David Cameron has warned immigrants that Britain will not be a “safe haven” should they arrive in the country, according to the BBC. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-33713268
