Police investigate racist tweet aimed at Arsenal hero Welbeck
GREATER Manchester Police have confirmed investigations are underway after Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck was the subject of a racist tweet following his match-winning strike against Manchester United on Monday night.
Welbeck fired Arsenal into the semi-finals of the FA Cup with a goal on his first return to his boyhood club following a £16m move to the Gunners last summer, haunting United Louis van Gaal who had deemed him surplus to requirements.
“We are aware of it and are investigating,” said a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson.
The 24-year-old also received death threats in the wake of his FA Cup starring role, which effectively ended any realistic chance of Van Gaal lifting a trophy in his first season in the Old Trafford hotseat.
One tweet read: “Danny Welbeck I will find you and I will kill you.” Others stated: “Hey Welbeck, when you die, I will celebrate it in front of your family.”, and “Somebody just KILL Welbeck! Can’t stand the a*******!”
Holders Arsenal will play either Bradford City or Reading in the semi-final at Wembley next month as manager Arsene Wenger bids to win his sixth FA Cup title.
