PM warns on migration
PRIME Minister David Cameron is to outline harsh new measures to control migration into Britain today.
Cameron will make a dual attack on the large-scale immigration that led to a spike in public anxiety during the election campaign, as well as on the welfare state that he says feeds work to migrant workers.
Immigration has “created a kind of discomfort and disjointedness” in communities, he will say, as migrants fail to integrate. He will advocate “good immigration, not mass immigration” and pledge to clamp down on student visas, which he blames for over 300,000 arrivals last year.
But he will also focus on reducing UK welfare benefits. “Migrants are filling gaps in the labour market left wide open by a welfare system that for years has paid British people not to work,” he will say. “That’s where the blame lies – at the door of our woeful welfare system.”
