PlayStation 4: Sales reach 10 million as 14 November UK release date revealed for PlayStation TV
Sony has sold 10m of its PlayStation 4 consoles in the nine months since launch and has revealed a 14 November UK release date for its new PlayStation TV streaming device.
Speaking at gaming conference Gamescom, Sony Computer Entertainment chief Jim Ryan said consumer sales of the console, not just units shipped to retailers, had reached the 10m mark.
The figure is a much needed boost for the struggling Japanese electronics company, with the PS4 selling more quickly than previous generation consoles- both its own PS3 and competitor Microsoft’s Xbox 360.
In the current battle between the newest consoles, Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One which were both released towards the end of last year, Sony looks to be edging ahead.
Microsoft said in April it had shipped 5m units, but has not revealed consumer sales figures since January when they surpassed 3m.
It also said monthly sales had more than doubled in the US following a $100 price drop in June that placed it at the same price point as the PS4, though the tech firm did not reveal exact numbers.
At Gamescom, Sony also revealed that PlayStation TV will be available in the UK from 14 November priced at £59.
The device lets gamers stream gameplay to other TVs in the house and access a back catalogue of PlayStation games.
Sony is also expanding outside of its core gaming market with the device which lets users stream TV and movies from its own entertainment services as well as third parties such as Netflix.
It sees Sony competing in the increasingly crowded TV streaming market with the likes of Apple TV, Google Chromecast and Roku.
