Owen goal is a timely reminder to Capello
Michael Owen gave England manager Fabio Capello a gentle reminder of his form as he fired an extra time winner for Newcastle in the Carling Cup last night.
Capello is due to name his England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Croatia on Sunday night and Owen looks set to have earned himself a recall after his second goal in as many games.
The 28-year-old’s winning goal in the first half of extra time brought relief to Magpies boss Kevin Keegan after Championship side Coventry had fought back from 2-0 down.
Newcastle dominated the first half and went ahead through a Scott Dann own goal before James Milner made it 2-0. But City hit back against the run of play on the stroke of half time through Clinton Morrison before Dann forced extra time with a goal in the fourth minute of added time.
But Owen, on as a substitute, wasn’t to be denied and sent the Magpies through to round three with a delicate side-footed finish.
The shock of the night, however, was at the Reebok Stadium where ten man Bolton crashed 2-1 to League One side Northampton thanks to a brace from Adebayo Akinfenwa.
Premier League newcomers West Brom and Hull are both also out, beaten after extra time at Hartlepool and Swansea respectively.
