OUT OF OFFICE
SLAVA’S SNOWSHOW AT ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL
This surreal, laugh-out-loud, poignant festive-themed physical theatre troupe has been quietly gaining plaudits for years. As of tomorrow, Londoners will get their first chance in 15 years to see the larger-than-life performance. This distinctive brand of Russian clowning sees a group of rather terrifying characters put on a spectacular show, which includes juggling gigantic snowballs and crawling over audience members. Categorising this insane show is tough – on one hand, it is perfect family-fodder, with the slapstick clowning a hit with kids. But it is also an intense, bravado display of silent physical theatre. With only three weeks in this run, it should be a top priority.
THE SECRET EMPORIUM CHRISTMAS MARKET
For a Christmas market with a big difference, head over to this one-day-only pop-up affair at Village Underground, near Liverpool Street. Hosted by Secret Garden Party, it promises a “Dickensian winter wonderland,” filled with cabaret acts and live performances, as well as original gifts from “carefully selected” British designers. If you’re looking for that special something for someone with eccentric tastes or just want to enjoy a lively afternoon while you browse Christmas tree decorations, this is the market for you. The Secret Emporium market is Christmas meets the East End by way of 1890 – which is more than enough reason for me.
