Our Ashes celebrations were inappropriate, admit England
ENGLAND’S Ashes heroes were yesterday forced to apologise following claims that they urinated on the field at the Oval during their celebrations.
The controversy arose on Monday, the day after England had completed a 3-0 series victory over Australia, ensuring they retained the urn, with a draw in the final Test in south London.
Spinner Graeme Swann appeared to admit that some players had urinated on the pitch in his newspaper column, saying: “I think the call of nature might have come once or twice but it was nothing untoward.”
A statement released by the England team, who face the Aussies in the first of two Twenty20 matches this evening, said they had not meant “to disrespect Surrey CCC, the Oval or anyone else involved in the game we love”.
It added: “As a team we pride ourselves on respecting all things cricket including the opposition and the grounds we play at. We got carried away amongst the euphoria of winning such a prestigious series and accept that some of our behaviour was inappropriate.
“If that has caused any offence to anyone we apologise for that and want to reassure people that it was a simple error of judgement more than anything else.”
