Oscar Pistorius to be released from prison less than one year into his sentence for killing Reeva Steenkamp
Oscar Pistorius will be released from jail and placed on house arrest next Tuesday, the South African parole review board has declared.
The Olympic athlete was sentenced to five years behind bars last year after being found guilty of the culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius claimed he was defending himself from what he thought was an intruder when he shot Steenkamp through a bathroom door in 2013.
The prosecution has appealed the initial verdict, arguing he should be guilty of murder.
An initial release date was set for 21 August, but it was blocked by South Africa's justice minister less than 48 hours before his planned release, as Pistorius had not yet served the required 10 months in prison.
But he is now set to serve the rest of his sentence "under correctional supervision" from 20 October.
In a statement the South African department of correctional services said: "The parole board considered all submissions, including the offender's profile report, the directives of the Parole Review Board and the submission of the victim's family."
