Olympics 2016 guide to Wednesday: What to watch schedule including Ashton Eaton’s debut, Dina Asher-Smith’s 200m bid and potential medals in sailing and show jumping
Ashton Eaton, one of the few track and field superstars yet to make his bow at Rio's Olympic Stadium, will begin the defence of his men's decathlon gold at 1:30pm in the 100m sprint, one of the American's strongest events.
The 28-year-old decathlon world record holder is expected to be similarly dominant in the long jump at 2:35pm but can struggle with the shot put and high jump, at 4:15pm and 9:45pm respectively.
British track and field interest will likely focus on 20-year-old Dina Asher-Smith in the women's 200m final at 2:30am on Thursday morning. The young European champion is tipped to challenge for a podium place against tough competition that includes Dutch star Dafne Schippers and 100m gold medallist Elaine Thompson.
Your best bet to stay awake until that point is to follow the women's long jump final from 1:15am which could include British world silver medallist Shara Proctor.
Earlier in the day Britain will bid for another equestrian gold in the final show jumping round at 2pm. Decorated veteran rider Nick Skelton is aiming to go out on a high at his seventh and final Olympics.
At 5:05pm and 6:05pm respectively, Britain's women and men's sailors will aim to repeat or even better the silver medals won four years ago in the 470 dinghy medal races.
Team GB's women's hockey squad are one win away from a medal having reached the semi-finals where they will play New Zealand at 9pm. Great Britain are the only team in the competition to have won all their games so far.
Football fans will also get the rare chance to see the Brazil men's team play at an accessible time, with their semi-final against Honduras scheduled for 5pm. Arsenal and Chelsea fans will have interest in the other semi-final at 8pm, when Blues midfielder John Obi-Mikel takes on Gunners youngster Serge Gnabry. Both have impressed for Nigeria and Germany respectively.
