Obama gave go-ahead for US airstrike on dam
The White House said yesterday that President Barack Obama had authorised US air strikes in Iraq to help retake control of the Mosul Dam, which had been held by Islamic State (IS) Sunni jihadis.
“The failure of the Mosul Dam could threaten the lives of large numbers of civilians, threaten US personnel and facilities… and prevent the Iraqi government from providing critical services to the Iraqi populace,” the White House said in a statement.
Meanwhile, David Cameron has warned that IS jihadis seeking support in the UK will be arrested, as he delivered a strong message yesterday about the threat they posed.
Writing in the Sunday Telegraph Cameron said: “If we do not act to stem the onslaught of this exception ally dangerous terrorist movement, it will only grow stronger until it can target us [in] Britain.
“We need a firm security response, whether that is military action to go after the terrorists, international cooperation on intelligence and counter-terrorism or uncompromising action against terrorists at home,” he added, warning that those found with IS flags on British streets would be arrested.
