No rest for City’s new Lord Mayor
THOUSANDS of supporters braved the rain on Saturday to come out and celebrate the inauguration of the new Lord Mayor of the City of London, Fiona Woolf.
As part of the 800-year-old tradition more than 7,000 participants took part in the three-and-a-half-mile procession from Bank to Aldwych and back, accompanied by everything from vintage cars and steamrollers to giant robots and penny farthings – though the Lord Mayor herself chose the more comfortable State Coach to make her way across town.
To celebrate only the second female Mayor in the post’s history, a special float made its debut at the show – organised by the Women in the City and Livery to represent women in business.
Though Woolf’s term as Lord Mayor will only last one year, there’ll be no chance to rest once her tenure is up. This morning, she was named as chancellor designate of The University of Law, a post she will take up in November 2014 after leaving Mansion House.
