Newcastle bid £21m for Berahino as transfer deadline nears
Premier League strugglers Newcastle United appear intent on assuming the status of the highest spenders in the January transfer window after bidding £21m for West Brom’s wantaway striker Saido Berahino yesterday.
The north east side already leads the way in terms of outlay this month having splashed out a combined £29m on midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and wing duo Andros Townsend and Henri Saivet.
With just over £100m already spent by top-flight clubs, if the Magpies were able to thrash out a deal for Berahino, it would all but guarantee that the total spend for this window would eclipse the £130m of January 2015.
Irrespective of the Berahino transfer, Newcastle manager Steve McClaren’s relentless reshaping of his squad is set to continue apace with the signing of Roma forward Seydou Doumbia on loan for the remainder of the season.
West Ham delved into the market yesterday and completed the signing of Fenerbahce striker Emmanuel Emenike on a temporary basis for the rest of the campaign, with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer.
League leaders Leicester City look set to be frustrated in their pursuit of CSKA Moscow striker Ahmed Musa after a fourth bid, believed to be in the region of £19m, was rejected last week.
The Foxes, however, are expected to complete an £11.5m deal for Chelsea frontman Loic Remy today as they look to strengthen their striking options in a bid to maintain their surprise title charge.
Everton have made a £13.5m for Lokomotic Moscow forward Oumar Niasse, having grown frustrated in their pursuit of Dynamo Kiev striker Andriy Yarmolenko.
The transfer window closes at 11pm tonight.
