Never mind the Olympics, Boris Johnson wants whiff whaff: London is campaigning to host the world table tennis championships
You can have your Olympics and your World Cup: a group is campaigning to turn the capital into whiff whaff central next year.
London will officially submit its bid to host a premiere international table tennis tournament on Tuesday, as part of the International Table Tennis Federation's (ITTF) World Pro Tour in 2017.
If successful, it will be the first time a globally sanctioned table tennis tournament ever staged in the capital.
The official bid is to stage London Cup 2017 in the Olympic Park over the Easter Bank holiday next year.
London's campaign for table tennis, supported by The Mayor’s Fund for London and China Britain Business Council, kicks off tomorrow at ping pong bar Bounce in Farringdon.
Paul Drinkhall (National Men’s Singles and Doubles Champion) Gavin Rumgay (10 time National Scottish Champion) and Tin Tin Ho (National Women’s Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles Champion) will be joining city officials at the ping-pong bar to launch the campaign.
Matthew Patten, chief exec of the Mayor’s Fund for London, said: “Nurturing the aspirations of young Londoners is an integral part of the work we do at the Mayor’s Fund for London. We are delighted to be the charity partner for the Super World Table Tennis Tournament.”
