Nadal pulls out of US Open after failing to shake off wrist injury
REIGNING US Open champion Rafael Nadal has his sights firmly fixed on a successful return to the court after failing to recover from a hand injury and announcing his withdrawal from Flushing Meadows, which gets underway on Monday.
The world No2 had hoped to defend his title despite missing the two hard-court warm-up tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati as a result of the right wrist injury suffered during a training session last month.
Nadal’s last taste of competitive action came at Wimbledon in July where he lost in the fourth round to Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios, with the 28-year-old determined to scale lofty heights once fully fit.
“There’s not much more I can do right now, other than accept the situation and, as always in my case, work hard in order to be able to compete at the highest level once I’m back,” said Spaniard Nadal.
