Myanmar elections 2015: Aung San Suu Kyi’s party wins first 15 of 16 seats declared
Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has won 15 of the first 16 seats declared in the country's first free elections in decades, local media is reporting.
The National League for Democracy is thought to be on course for a landslide victory, with all of the first 12 seats being declared a victory for the challenger party.
NLD is reported as saying it expected to win 70 per cent of the total seats being contested, although one spokesman said it could be as much as 90 per cent.
Htay Oo, acting chairman of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development party, acknowledged defeat early on, telling Reuters: "We lost".
Suu Kyi, who has spent almost 15 years under house arrest, appeared on the balcony of the NLD's headquarters in Yangon, confidently telling crowds that "I think you all have the idea of the results".
However, even if her party is successful she will not be allowed to become president under the current constitution, which was written by the ruling junta.
