A huge proportion of this growth came from advertising revenues, which surged 63 per cent from $3.8bn to $6.2bn.
And mobile advertising revenue was particularly significant, representing 84 per cent of the total ad revenue for the second quarter, up from 76 per cent in the same three month period of 2015.
"Our community and business had another good quarter," said Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
"We're particularly pleased with our progress in video as we move towards a world where video is at the heart of all our services."
