More than 350,000 people flock to the City every day
THE CITY of London’s population jumps 56 times on the average weekday, according to official statistics that lay bare the enormous scale of the daily British commute.
Just 6,000 people live in the square mile but this jumps to 358,000 on a typical day, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Other parts of the capital see massive inflows, with the borough of Westminster tripling in size from 176,000 people to 644,000.
Tower Hamlets – which includes Canary Wharf – has 110,000 people commuting in every working day to push the population up to 310,000.
The analysis also revealed that the London boroughs of Lewisham and Wandsworth see a quarter of their population vanish every working day, suggesting they are largely used as dormitory settlements by commuters.
It also found that boroughs that experience substantial population gains on working days are more likely to be filled with younger people.
According to the ONS, Manchester was the only council area outside London that sees a population increase of more than 100,000 people on working days.
