Microsoft names Satya Nadella as next CEO
Tech giant Microsoft have named Satya Nadella as their next CEO.
Nadella was widely considered to be the front runner for the post, and has become the company's third boss, replacing Steve Ballmer.
The search for the next chief took nearly 24 weeks, and Microsoft founder Bill Gates says there's "no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella."
The newcomer to the role joined Microsoft 22 years ago, and says that while many companies "aspire to change the world … very few have all the elements required: talent, resources and perseverance".
"Microsoft has proven that it has all three in abundance", Nadella insists, and in his first letter to staff, the incoming boss said that "today is a very humbling day for me."
Recognising the changes necessary at the head of the tech superpower, Nadella noted the shift from desktop computing – the platform on which Microsoft established its dominance.
In our early history, our mission was about the PC on every desk and home, a goal we have mostly achieved in the developed world. Today we’re focused on a broader range of devices. While the deal is not yet complete, we will welcome to our family Nokia devices and services and the new mobile capabilities they bring us.
As we look forward, we must zero in on what Microsoft can uniquely contribute to the world. The opportunity ahead will require us to reimagine a lot of what we have done in the past for a mobile and cloud-first world, and do new things.
