Media mavens hog top spots in list of girl power
THE BBC’S Woman’s Hour Power List was released yesterday, and among the politicians, musicians and CEOs forging a path for powerful ladies across the country, half of the finalists were media people themselves.
The power list, announced on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, recognises women who have climbed the ladder, broken the glass ceiling and influenced the British public.
Although SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon was crowned the UK’s most influential woman, joining her in the top ten were a crop of media professionals, including American Vogue editor Anna Wintour (no. 2), Guardian editor Kath Viner (no. 4), ex-Times and Sunday Times journalist Camilla Cavendish (no. 5) and Economist editor Zanny Minton Beddoes (no. 9).
The only chief executive on the list is Karen Blackett, running media marketing firm MediaCom. Panel Judge Emma Barnet said: “Brokers of hard power like prime ministers, presidents and CEOs are no longer calling all the shots.”
