Matalan expands abroad with shops in Malta
Matalan is expanding abroad with the opening of two new stores in Malta.
The retailer currently has 227 stores in the UK, and the two stores in Malta add to Matalan's international portfolio, which comprises 23 stores.
The new outlets at The Strand, Sliema and Zabbar Road, Fgura, will create jobs for around 60 staff. Matalan has been expanding its international footprint since 2010, when it set up its first shop abroad in Dubai.

Since then, the retailer has been focussing on the Middle East, and it also opened a store in Armenia in October 2016.
Damian Hopkins, international director of Matalan said: “We are thrilled to be opening our first stores in Malta, trading has been very strong in both of our new stores exceeding our expectations; we have been delighted by the local customers’ reactions to our product ranges and our competitive price position”.
The budget retailer is now looking for opportunities in eastern Europe. It said it is wanting to set up shop in countries "where its great value fashion and home product will appeal".
