Henley Royal Regatta 2015: Mid-race maritime mayhem as oars melt in heatwave
We’ve had melting oars, searing hangovers and some seriously questionable fashion choices this week. It can only mean one thing; the Henley Royal Regatta is back.
The annual event, dating back to 1839, always takes place from Wednesday to Sunday. Lucky attendees move in their thousands from London to Oxfordshire this time of year for a spot of boating on the Thames.
Rowers’ efforts were marred by melting oars during Wednesday’s heatwave. An oar belonging to King’s School Canterbury’s team melted in the intense heat during the opening race, with the glue holding the paddle in place liquefied mid-race. Sunday, which will see all the finals, will be the most exciting day for action. Olympic rower Sir Steve Redgrave will oversee the posh proceedings this year. Top Drawer!
