Sanches, who impressed against his new employers in the Champions League, had reportedly been scouted by Manchester United for 22 consecutive games and earmarked by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward as a top target for the summer transfer window.
Yet, in what has become a frustratingly familiar theme for United fans in recent years, they have missed out on the midfielder to another top European club.
Sanches has signed a five-year contract with the German giants and becomes the fourth-most expensive teenager in football history behind Raheem Sterling, Lucas Moura and Wayne Rooney.
