Maldives unveils $3 tourist tax
The president of the Maldives has unveiled plans for a daily $3 (£1.80) tax on tourists to fund the country’s radical efforts to combat climate change. President Mohammed Nasheed has announced a series of measures to ward off the threat of rising sea levels on the island nation, which is on average little more than 2 metres above sea level. The new tax complements his plans to buy land to house the population if the islands are submerged and to make the Maldives the world’s first carbon-neutral country within a decade.
