Making the most out of Greenwich
Former hospital is the site of long-awaited housing scheme set around public square
A MAJOR housing scheme uniting the public and private sector has brought property developers, politicans, housing associations and the NHS together in East Greenwich.
Greenwich Square, a £225m regeneration scheme, will re-open its doors to prospective buyers this month as it announces the completion of its second phase of construction.
Built on the site of the old Greenwich District Hospital, the development of 645 homes is designed to foster a “community hub” centred around a green public square, surrounded by eateries, shops, a gym, library and GP practice. The latest homes from the development are double-storey, three bedroom, terraced maisonettes, each with a private garden or balcony that are currently on the market from £545,000.
The Mayor of London’s office teamed up with Greenwich Council, NHS Greenwich, housing association L&Q, and two private property developers – Hadley Property and Mace – to join the project under the joint title Hadley Mace.
Hadley Property was behind Tower View, luxury apartments in St Katharine’s Docks, and Mace is the construction team behind The Shard.
The rest of the development will include one to three bedroom apartments and family-oriented townhouses with landscaped gardens, all to be unveiled in phases over five years.
But it’s the very nature of this partnership between local authorities and private developers that has really made it a reality, says David Grover, chief operating officer of Mace.
“This long-awaited investment into East Greenwich,” he adds, “has finally been realised in a development that will demonstrate the benefits of public-private consortium and bring regeneration to a significant but under-utilised area of London.”
Properties will be available to buy from 18 April through Savills. For viewings, call 0800 077 8177 or email sales@greenwichsquare-london.com
