Maggie’s cancer centre has green light at St Barts
Plans to build a new cancer care centre at St Bartholomew’s Hospital were passed by the City of London Planning and Transportation Committee yesterday, having received support from City figures such as Sam Laidlaw of Centrica and HSBC’s Stuart Gullliver, with backing from City A.M.
Building of the centre, designed by architect Steven Holl and proposed by Maggie’s cancer charity at the invitation of Barts Health NHS Trust, is expected to get underway shortly.
“We very much welcome the Committee’s decision and are truly thankful for all the support our scheme has received,” said Laura Lee, Maggie’s chief executive.
No statement has been released by opponents of the scheme, a group called The Friends of the Great Hall & Archive of St Bartholomew’s, but Lee has said Maggie’s will support the long-term restoration and preservation of the historic north wing of the Grade 11 listed St Bartholomew’s Great Hall.
