Luis Suarez ban: Uruguayan faces another long suspension after bite
Controversy-magnet Luis Suarez is dominating the back pages again after appearing to bite Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, the third time in his career that he has sunk his teeth into an opponent.
While a psychologist may have predicted that the Uruguayan forward would bite an opponent again and a Norwegian football fan won almost £2,000 betting Suarez would do it at this World Cup, the initial reaction of many football fans to the incident was utter disbelief at how this seemingly happened again.
Given Suarez's history for repeat offending, it should perhaps not have come as such a shock.
The Uruguayan striker courted controversy at the quarter finals of the last World Cup when he handled the ball on the line to deny Ghana a winner in the last minute of extra time. Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting spot kick and Uruguay ended up winning a penalty shoot-out to progress.
While getting sent off for his offence, Suarez was branded a 'cheat' for his actions, which led to the elimination of crowd favourites and rank outsiders Ghana.
While he has steered clear of the authorities in international games since then, Suarez has been suspended for a staggering 25 matches in the last four seasons for his clubs, Ajax and Liverpool, despite never being sent off in that period.
Suarez has been suspended for a total of 17 matches in two separate biting incidents in the Netherlands and England in the last four years. In December 2010 he bit PSV defender Otman Bakkal's shoulder playing for Ajax, before trying to take a chunk out of Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in 2013.
The 27-year-old was also sidelined for eight matches in 2012 for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
As the focus now turns to Fifa's disciplinary committee and whether it might impose the maximum two-year ban for Suarez's latest misdemeanour, the Uruguayan could once again face a prolonged period on the sidelines without actually seeing red on the pitch.
