London weather: Snow, ice, sleet and showers forecast for London and the south east as freezing conditions cross Britain
London is facing below-freezing conditions in the coming days, with the Met Office warning of a high chance of snow and ice from tonight (14 January).
The north of England is already being buffeted with heavy snow, causing chaos on roads as forecasters predict the worst of it will land in Northumberland and County Durham.
That is moving south towards Wales, the West Midlands and the west country, with as much as 10 centimetres settling in some parts.
But in the capital, frequent showers will turn to snow and sleet tonight. The Met Office has said between one and three centimetres "is possible" in areas higher than 200 metres above sea levels. Ice is also likely to form on untreated surfaces, which could cause travel disruption.
"With some of the showers falling as sleet or rain, ice is more likely to prove a hazard here where surfaces are untreated," the Met Office said. "Please be aware of the likelihood of some travel disruption and difficult driving conditions."
"Amounts of snow towards the south and east of the warning area are uncertain and many places will see very little, but ice will be a likely hazard in any case."
The warning comes ahead of bitter conditions, with temperatures in London forecast to drop as low as -3*C on the weekend.
The government has already issued a cold weather plan for people who are vulnerable to bad weather.
