London airport expansion: Scottish Conservatives leader Ruth Davidson MSP puts pressure on Cameron over Heathrow
The top Conservatives in Scotland and Wales are today supporting a third runway at Heathrow, urging the government to make a quick decision to back the Airports Commission’s recommendation.
In an open letter published today, Ruth Davidson, leader of the Scottish Conservatives, and Andrew R.T. Davies, leader of the Welsh Conservatives, said Heathrow “already does what no other UK airport can”.
“If our family of nations are to trade their way through the modern world, then we need to be able to get our goods to the markets that want to buy them. Expanding Heathrow is the best way to do this,” they said.
Heathrow chief executive John Holland-Kay welcomed the letter, saying: "Today’s united message from the leaders of the Scottish and Welsh Conservatives couldn’t have been clearer – expand Heathrow and unleash growth across the country. They join unions, businesses and local people in backing Heathrow expansion. It is the right decision for Britain. Let's make it happen."
Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to respond to the Airports Commission's report by Christmas.
