Liverpool win as Spurs and Newcastle draw
TOTTENHAM and Newcastle were last night held to goalless Europa League draws as Liverpool fought back to beat Young Boys.
For the three instances in which Newcastle hit the woodwork, hosts Spurs against Lazio were unfortunate in having two goals disallowed. Clint Dempsey and Steven Caulker respectively had first and second-half headed efforts harshly judged as offside when Spurs otherwise failed to look like scoring.
It was against Maritimo that Newcastle’s Dan Gosling and Shola Ameobi found both the post and the bar, though despite their apparent lack of luck they required Davide Santon to clear Valentin Roberge’s header off the line as the Portuguese side’s threat proved constant but in vain.
After falling 3-2 behind with half an hour to go, Liverpool substitute Jonjo Shelvey scored twice in a comeback that resulted in a 5-3 victory. Juhani Ojala, Raphael Nuzzolo and Gonzalo Zarate gave Young Boys the lead, while an Ojala own goal, Andre Wisdom and Sebastian Coates added to Shelvey’s goals for the away win.
