Liverpool top of Premier League for fees spent on agents
Liverpool shelled out the most in agents’ fees of any Premier League club during the past 12 months despite enduring a torrid time on the pitch which culminated in the sacking of manager Brendan Rodgers.
Figures released by the Premier League yesterday showed that the Reds paid £14.3 million to agents between 1 October 2014 and 30 September 2015, a period during which their clubs splurged a record-breaking £129.9m to middlemen.
Manchester United spent the second most and their outlay on fees nearly doubled from the same period last year to just under £14m, while Arsenal’s almost tripled at £11.9m, up from £4.3m
Given manager Arsene Wenger completed just two signings during the period in question, the increase has been attributed by some observers to a series of contract renewals.
There were significant cuts to the sums paid out by both Chelsea and Tottenham, down from £16.8m and £11m to roughly £12m and £6m respectively.
Manchester City’s payments fell marginally to £12.4m despite splashing out more than £150m on the likes of Raheem Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne during their summer spending spree.
