Lions tour has helped Farrell grow, says Sarries chief McCall
SARACENS director of rugby Mark McCall believes fly-half Owen Farrell is vastly improved since touring with the British & Irish Lions in Australia last year.
Farrell scored 17 points in a man of the match performance as Sarries defeated Harlequins 39-17 on Saturday to reclaim top spot in the Aviva Premiership in front of a world record crowd for a club match of 83,889 at Wembley.
McCall said: “You can see how much Farrell has improved since last summer. The Lions tour has made a huge difference to him. He’s such a mature 22-year-old.
“We played some good stuff but we weren’t at our best.
“When we got it right we were pretty clinical but there were some frustrations as well.
“It was a brilliant occasion to have a world record crowd for a run-ofthe mill Premiership game.”
Elsewhere, London Irish could not mark their St Patrick’s Day celebrations with a win, falling to a heavy 44-23 defeat against Bath at the Madejski Stadium, despite trailing just 14-13 at half-time.
On Friday night, Jake Cooper Woolley’s converted stoppage-time try saw London Wasps snatch a 13-11 victory from the jaws of defeat and ensure Worcester Warriors remain winless this term.
