Lingmerth nets maiden PGA title with play-off victory over Rose
ENGLAND’S Justin Rose failed to secure the second Memorial Tournament title of his career after suffering a play-off defeat to Sweden’s David Lingmerth at Muirfield Village last night.
Rose, who claimed his maiden PGA Tour title in this event in 2010, forced a play-off by sinking a putt on the 18th hole having initially found the bunker from the tee.
Lingmerth claimed his first PGA Tour success after carding a three-under-par 69 in yesterday’s final round to finish 15 under for the tournament, wiping out the three-shot lead which Rose had enjoyed at the close of play on Saturday evening.
Rose required a play-off in his quest for the title following an even final round to finish on 15 under. He carded a total of six bogeys yesterday which saw him slip from a commanding lead at the start of the day’s play. But a birdie on 17 and then a final par ensured the 2013 US Open winner salvaged a play-off, although Lingmerth its third hole.
American Jordan Spieth finished two shots behind Lingmerth and Rose having finished on 13 under for the tournament, level with Italy’s Francesco Molinari, while Jim Furyk of the United States finished on a three-way split on 12 under.
