Leveson report on press ethics to be revealed next Thursday
LORD Justice Leveson will report the results of his long-awaited press inquiry next Thursday, it was announced yesterday.
The wide-ranging report into the ethics and practices of the press will be published at 1.30pm. It will digest months of evidence from victims of phone hacking, top figures in the media, and politicians, and recommend proposals to regulate the industry.
The year-long inquiry was set up in the wake of last year’s phone hacking scandal, which saw the closure of the News of the World.
Lord Leveson’s findings will be heavily scrutinised by industry figures and politicians, and David Cameron will make a statement to the Commons on the day it is published. The Prime Minister has vowed to implement any of Lord Leveson’s recommendations that are not “bonkers”.
Most of the national newspaper industry has heavily opposed any form of state regulation of the press, a proposal that Leveson is believed to be in favour of.
